ARTIST
The dog has a long history in portraiture, a tradition started by Queen
Victoria, who had many of her beloved dogs painted. It therefore became
extremely fashionable to have one’s dog painted in the 19th Century and
has continued to be so to the present day. Artists such as Sir Edwin
Landseer, Maud Earl, Richard Ansdell, John Emms and Arthur Wardle to
name a few, became very well known in their day for their dog portraiture.

It is the continuation of this tradition that Claire Eastgate is making her
mark. She has an ability to capture both representation and character
unique to each of her subjects. Her fluid brushwork and careful observation,
finished with a classical realism, has elevated her to one of the UK’s
foremost portrait painters in canine art. Her paintings now hang in many
national and international collections.

Born in the UK in 1968, Claire studied at Shrewsbury college, Birmingham
School of Art with further studies at The Slade School of Art and private
tutoring with Eric Morby.

Claire works mainly to commission, however, some of her new works
can be seen at the Stockbridge Gallery in Hampshire, the UK specialist in
canine art. She lives in south Shropshire.
