PEOPLE

Some of the work shown here are oil sketches and/or mixed media paintings usually created on board. They are preliminary studies to the larger oil on canvas portraits or paintings, (also shown here). These studies, often created within minutes, have an energy that feels quite different from the finished piece that they attribute to. This is a very necessary part of the process as it not only familiarises me with the physical appearance of the subject, but captures the essence of character. It also allows me to work out what it is I am looking for and what exactly I wish to portray.

'The Poets' at the National Portrait Gallery, BP Award 2017 Exhibition. 'The Poets' 120cm x 120cm Oil and mixed media on canvas 2017. Portrait of the Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and the National Poet of Wales Gillian Clarke. Currently showing in the BP Portrait Award 2017 exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery.  “I’m thrilled with this painting which captures my dear friend, the Welsh poet Gillian Clarke, and I at work and in conversation at Ty Newydd. “ Carol Ann Duffy  “The sitting felt easy, three artists recording a shared hour in the conservatory at Ty Newydd, writing in my journal in the company of a poet and a painter. I felt none of the nervousness I feel when being photographed. Some have said the camera steals your soul. This felt more like an exchange of creative ideas.”  Gillian Clarke "The portrait I think I like most, however, is Claire Eastgate’s double portrait of the poets Gillian Clarke and Carol Ann Duffy. It’s one of the most psychologically resonant here, and the delicate use of familiar objects – a book, absorbing the attention, a mug set down – is part of its powerful effect. Eastgate succeeds, in quite an unobtrusive way, in showing these women as powerfully intelligent. Clarke seems to be interrogating the book, not just reading it in absorption. Duffy’s gaze, stern but benevolent, is unmistakable. I like the power of these personalities; and Eastgate’s personality, too, rises from the evident enjoyment of the challenge." Susan Llewellyn Founder member of BIID. 30" x 26" Oil on board.  "Claire Eastgate did a portrait of my beloved partner last year  who has since sadly died on 1 January 2017. The portrait which is absolutely amazing and an incredible replica of Susan, is uncanny as it almost makes you feel it is actually her in front of you. It has been a huge comfort to me as I look at it, even talk to it and feel her eyes looking at me where ever I am in the room.  Claire’s work is incredible she really gets to know and understand her subject. Not only is she a brilliant human artist but an animal artist too. She painted our dogs and totally got their personalities. The one looking bored and the other one shy and nervous. I can’t recommend her work highly enough. If you commission her to do a portrait you will not be disappointed." Angela Hamlin, Director Draycott Nursing & Care.
